Now, the better reason to keep your job is that when you’re not working on your art—when you’re not thinking about it—your unconscious will be working on it. A great deal of A.E. Houseman’s poetry was composed when he was away form his desk. He habitually took a stroll for two or three hours a day. It was then, he remarked, that “sometimes a line or two of verse, sometimes a whole stanza at once,” would spring into his mind.
